Bhubaneswar: Odisha is witnessing an unprecedented boom in clean energy adoption, crossing a major milestone of 1.12 lakh residential rooftop solar installations. This massive transformation is being driven forward under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a flagship initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at providing free electricity to households.
Reviewing the progress of this flagship program, Shri Vishal Kumar Dev, Additional Chief Secretary for Energy and Electronics & Information Technology, expressed deep satisfaction with the state’s rapid trajectory. Administrative data reveals a dramatic 31-fold surge in adoption, jumping from just 3,617 installations in the 2024-25 fiscal year to 56,019 installations in 2025-26.
The momentum has accelerated even further in the current 2026-27 fiscal year. In just its first two months, the state successfully added 52,991 new connections, pushing the cumulative total past the 1.12 lakh mark and effectively turning tens of thousands of local homes into self-sustaining, clean energy hubs.
To ensure long-term accessibility and lower financial barriers for families, the state is implementing a Ministry of New and Renewable Energy approved Utility-Led Aggregation model. This framework is specifically designed to support an initial target of 1.5 lakh connections, making solar systems significantly more affordable and easier to install across diverse neighborhoods.
Officials noted that the rapid expansion under Shri Dev’s direct review reflects a strong commitment to sustainable infrastructure. By turning residential roofs into clean power generators, the state is actively lowering monthly utility bills for citizens, lowering carbon emissions, and building a cleaner, more resilient energy future for Odisha.
