New DelhI: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi extended his warm greetings on the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day, emphasizing the critical role of rural self-governance in strengthening the foundations of Indian democracy. In a message, the Prime Minister highlighted that panchayats are no longer just implementing agencies for government schemes but are actively shaping the direction of local development based on community needs.
The Prime Minister underscored the government’s commitment to empowering these local bodies through increased resources and modern technology. Notably, the Sixteenth Finance Commission has made a historic allocation of 435,000 crore rupees for rural local bodies, marking an 84 percent increase compared to the previous commission. This financial boost is intended to enhance both the efficiency and self-reliance of panchayats.
A significant portion of the message was dedicated to the impact of digital platforms, which have made panchayat management and financial processes more transparent and accountable. The Prime Minister also expressed pride in the leadership of over 1.4 million women representatives who are currently heading panchayats across the country, stating that their leadership is transforming both rural governance and social perspectives.
Regarding property rights, the Prime Minister noted the success of the PM-SVAMITVA scheme, which has completed surveys in approximately 330,000 villages and generated over 30 million property cards. This initiative is expected to reduce land disputes and legal burdens for rural families.
The message concluded with a call for panchayats to utilize their revenue collection powers innovatively to achieve true financial independence.
Shri Sushil Kumar Lohani, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, noted that this message from the Prime Minister serves as a powerful influence for those working at the grassroots level, encouraging a unified effort toward building a developed and self-reliant India. Congratulations were also extended to the winners of the National Panchayat Awards for their exemplary service to public welfare.
