Bhubaneswar: Lok Bhavan has secured a landmark environmental achievement by becoming the first Lok Bhavan in India to be certified green and rated Platinum.
This prestigious distinction makes it the first campus to attain a Platinum rating under the revised and highly stringent Indian Green Building Council Green Campus v1 rating system that was introduced in July 2024.
Governor Dr Haribabu Kambhampati expressed immense happiness and pride over the milestone, highlighting how the achievement establishes Lok Bhavan as one of the highest rated green campuses in the country.
The official recognition reflects a comprehensive commitment to ecological sustainability across the entire property. Achieving an impressive score of 88 out of 100 from the Indian Green Building Council, the campus maintains over 80 percent green cover. A thorough environmental audit revealed a thriving ecosystem on site, documenting 2,374 trees across 72 distinct tree species.
Resource management on campus has seen drastic improvements through targeted sustainable measures. Water usage has dropped by more than 35 percent, supported by a comprehensive rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge system.
On the energy front, the campus features 635 kilowatt-peak of installed solar power capacity, pushing the complex closer to its goal of becoming a Net Zero campus. The overall energy efficiency is further highlighted by an Energy Performance Index of 50.57 kilowatt-hours per square meter per year.
Waste management and sustainable transport are fully integrated into daily operations. The campus achieves 100 percent treatment and reuse of organic waste alongside a 100 percent diversion of dry waste away from landfills.
Furthermore, internal mobility is powered entirely by electric vehicles backed by robust charging infrastructure. Setting a major precedent for government institutions nationwide, Lok Bhavan has also become the first Lok Bhavan in India to adopt an all-electric official carcade.
