Bhubaneswar: In a major step toward modernizing state agriculture, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment held a high-level meeting to explore the commercial cultivation of Bt cotton in Odisha.
The meeting was chaired by Shri Sachin Ramachandra Jadhav, Secretary, Agriculture and Farmer’s Empowerment, who met with representatives from the National Seed Association of India (NSAI) to deliberate on the scope and potential of genetically modified cotton across the state.
During the meeting, NSAI officials presented a detailed report titled “Bt Cotton: Opportunity for Odisha.” The presentation outlined the necessary regulatory frameworks, potential yield enhancements, and a structured implementation roadmap tailored for the state’s agro-climatic zones. The strategy aims to evaluate legal and environmental approvals while setting up a viable supply chain for high-quality seeds.
The primary focus of the discussion centered on how adopting Bt cotton could transform regional farming economics. By offering inherent resistance against devastating pests such as the American bollworm, Bt cotton reduces crop vulnerability and drastically lowers reliance on chemical pesticides. This translates to reduced input costs for cultivators, improved pest management, and higher overall crop productivity.
For Odisha, expanding cotton infrastructure aligns with broader efforts to diversify crops beyond traditional paddy cultivation and boost overall agrarian income. State officials emphasized that any future rollout will prioritize scientific validation, environmental sustainability, and farmer awareness to ensure maximum benefits reach local communities. The collaboration between the state government and seed industry stakeholders signals a deliberate push to integrate modern bio-technology into Odisha’s agricultural landscape.
