Bhubaneswar: Cracking down a major drug case, the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissionerate on Wednesday seized 550 gram of brown sugar and Rs 33 lakh cash from a house at Kesura area in Bhubaneswar.
A special team of the police today raided a house in Kesura area under Saheed Nagar police limits and seized around 550 gm of brown sugar and Rs 34.80 lakh cash from the spot, Police Commissioner Soumendra Priyadarshi said here.
The police have also arrested a youth and a woman in connection with the case. Besides, an alto car and two motorcycles have also been seized, Mr Priyadarshi said.
The Commissioner said seizure of such a huge amount of cash 9Rs 34.80 lakh) along with the brown sugar is very rare in Odisha.
“We suspect that the case must be related to the crime as the woman is unable to give satisfactory answers about the cash seized from the spot,” he further said.
Briefing more about the crime, the Police Commissioner said search is on to nab the husband of the arrested woman and they will also do a detailed investigation on the financial aspect of the case.
“We have strengthened our anti-drug enforcement drives in the twin city Bhubaneswar and Cuttack and in the past four months, over 5.10 kg of brown sugar has been seized,” the CP said.
While 2.2 kg of brown sugar seized by Bhubaneswar Urban Police District, 3.1 kg seized in Cuttack Urban Police District, he informed.The brown sugar is mostly procured from Murshidabad, Malda and other areas in West Bengal and transported to Odisha through Jaleswar route. The police also suspect Jaleswar area link in the case as the arrested youth is from the same area.
