MEIL Bags OHPC Project

Bhubaneswar: In a major step toward bolstering Odisha state’s clean energy infrastructure, Odisha Hydro Power Corporation Limited has officially issued a Letter of Intent to Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited(MEIL) for the construction of the landmark 600 MW Upper Indravati Pumped Storage Project.

The event was graced by Shri Vishal Kumar Dev, Additional Chief Secretary of the Energy Department and Chairman of OHPC. As Odisha continues to expand its renewable footprint with solar and wind power, flexible generation facilities like pumped storage are becoming crucial for grid management.

Under ACS Shri Dev’s strategic guidance, projects of this scale are setting higher standards for sustainable infrastructure, playing a pivotal role in maintaining grid stability, balancing variable renewable inputs, and ensuring a dependable power supply for the entire region.

The project is located at Ranibahal in the Kalahandi district, strategically situated near the existing Upper Indravati Hydro Electric complex. Designed as a major energy storage and peak-power generation facility, the complex will feature four units capable of generating 150 MW each.

It operates by utilizing two reservoirs: taking advantage of the existing Indravati reservoir as the upper basin and creating a dedicated lower reservoir downstream. Water will be circulated between these reservoirs through an underground power station housing reversible turbine-generator sets, enabling power generation during peak demand periods and pumping water back up during off-peak times.

The Upper Indravati Pumped Storage Project will play a pivotal role in maintaining grid stability, balancing variable renewable inputs, and ensuring a dependable, sustainable power supply for the entire region.

With the official award of the Letter of Intent to MEIL, work on the infrastructure and civil-hydromechanical works is moving ahead, marking a transformative milestone in Odisha’s journey toward clean energy security and long-term economic resilience.
