World-Class Jagannath Heritage Center Planned

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is embarking on an ambitious project to establish a world-class museum and interpretation center in Puri, dedicated to promoting the rich culture and heritage of Lord Jagannath. The initiative has received a significant boost following a visit by a high-level delegation led by Minister Works, Law and Excise Prithiviraj Harichandan to the acclaimed “Virasat-e-Khalsa” museum in Punjab’s Rupnagar (Ropar) district.

The Team that visited Virasat-e-Khalsa included eminent scholar and Advocate General Shri Pitamber Achrya, Principal Secretary Works Department Sri Sanjay Kumar Singh, Chief Administrator, Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, Dr.Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Managing Director of OBCC Er. Samir Hota, and Advisor of OBCC Er. Jayakrishna Das.

The profound experience at Virasat-e-Khalsa, which impressively showcases the philosophy of the Sikh Gurus and the vibrant culture of Punjab, has provided invaluable guidance for the conceptualization and preparation of the proposed Jagannath museum. The aim is to create a similar world-class facility that deeply resonates with visitors and serves as an invaluable gift to future generations, preserving and promoting the unique spiritual and cultural legacy of Lord Jagannath.

The proposed museum and interpretation center in Puri will serve as a comprehensive hub for the study, documentation, and promotion of Jagannath culture. Plans include showcasing the history of the temple’s construction, the intricate process of crafting the wooden deities, historical events like Kalinga’s victory in Kanchi, and the myriad festivals and rituals associated with the Jagannath cult. These narratives are envisioned to be brought to life through a diverse range of exhibits, including paintings, miniature sculptures, Pattachitra, plaques, and interactive displays.

Furthermore, the complex is slated to feature a state-of-the-art research center and library, offering extensive resources on Jagannath and Odia culture, including e-library facilities for global accessibility. A 300-seat auditorium will host daily sound and light shows, presenting captivating episodes from Lord Jagannath’s rich legacy in multiple languages. An open-air stage will also be incorporated to facilitate cultural performances, providing a platform for local artists and traditions.

Their insights and the inspiration drawn from Punjab’s exemplary museum are expected to shape the Puri project into a truly immersive and educational experience, significantly enhancing cultural tourism in Odisha while honoring the enduring spiritual and artistic heritage of Lord Jagannath. This endeavor marks a significant step towards ensuring that the profound culture of Lord Jagannath is accessible and understood by a global audience for generations to come.
