Bhubaneswar: A multidisciplinary medical team at IMS and SUM Hospital-2 in Phulnakhara recently diagnosed and successfully treated a rare and life-threatening obstetric emergency involving delayed postpartum haemorrhage caused by a uterine artery pseudoaneurysm.
The patient was admitted to the hospital with severe per-vaginal bleeding three days after undergoing a caesarean section. Due to substantial blood loss, she was haemodynamically unstable upon arrival. A Critical Care team led by Dr. Suvankar, alongside the Obstetrics and Gynaecology team led by Dr. Abhijeet and the Nephrology team led by Dr. Hapi Patra, immediately stabilized her in the Intensive Care Unit.
A uterine artery pseudoaneurysm occurs when a defect in the wall of the uterine artery permits blood to leak into adjacent tissue, creating a high-risk vascular lesion. Utilizing advanced diagnostic equipment, clinicians performed a CT Angiography, which confirmed the pseudoaneurysm as the source of the hemorrhage.
Following diagnosis, an Interventional Radiology team led by Dr. Srikant Sundara performed a uterine artery embolisation. The minimally invasive procedure successfully controlled the bleeding, eliminating the need for major surgical intervention. The patient made a complete recovery and was discharged in stable condition within a week.
This case illustrates the critical role that specialized multidisciplinary coordination, rapid diagnosis, and advanced therapeutic interventions play in successfully managing life-threatening maternal complications.
