Bhubaneswar: Elections to one Rajya Sabha seat in Odisha will be held on September 3, the Election Commission said today.
The formal notification for the Rajya Sabha election will be issued on August 14 and the last date for filing of poll papers is August 21, the Commission said.
The nominations will be scrutinised on August 22 while candidates can withdraw their nominations by August 27. The election for each Rajya Sabha seat will be held on September 3 and the results will be announced the same day.
As per the notification, the polling will be conducted from 9 am to 4 pm.
The one Rajya Sabha seat from Odisha had fallen vacant following the resignation of Mamata Mohanta on July 31, 2024. Her term was scheduled to expire in April 2026.
After resigning as Rajya Sabha MP and from the primary membership of the BJD, Mohanta had subsequently joined the BJP. Now speculations are high that she will again re-nominated by the BJP for the Upper House of the Parliament.
In total, the elections will be held for 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats in nine states including one in Odisha. Ten Rajya Sabha seats fell vacant as the sitting members, including Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Sarbananda Sonowal and Jyotiraditya Scindia, were elected to the Lok Sabha.
