Bhubaneswar: Cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’, which is gaining strength over southwest Bay of Bengal, will bring heavy rainfall in south Odisha districts from December 4 to 6, IMD said today.
In a special bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm Michaung (pronounced as Migjaum) over Southwest Bay of Bengal lay centered over the same region about 250 km east of Puducherry, 230 km east-southeast of Chennai, 350 km southeast of Nellore, 460 km south-southeast of Bapatla and 480 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam.
It is likely to continue to move northwestwards, intensify further and reach Westcentral Bay Of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamilnadu coasts by December 4 morning.
Thereafter, it would move nearly northwards almost parallel and close to south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during forenoon of December 5 as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph, the IMD said.
Under its impact, light to moderate rainfall would occur in the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapti, Ganjam, Puri, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nayagarh, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack on Monday.
Predicting heavy rainfall, the IMD has issued Yellow Warning for (7 to 11 cm) for Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts for tomorrow.
Similarly, heavy to very rainfall (7 to 20 cm) would occur at one or two places over the districts of Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Puri, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam on Tuesday.
On November 6, Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Nayagarh, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kandhamal, koraput, Malkangiri and Rayagada.
Light to moderate thundershower would occur at most places over the districts of coastal Odisha, and at many places over the districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput and at a few places over the rest districts of Odisha.
As the cyclone will reach towards Andhra Pradesh, rough to very rough sea conditions are likely from December 4 evening to December 5, the Met Department said.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into deep sea over southwest Bay of Bengal till December 5; Westcentral Bay of Bengal till 6th December and along & off Odisha coast during 4th December evening to 6th December.
The IMD has also said that the cyclone system may damage standing crops and vegetables, kutcha Road, and kutcha houses.
Harvesting of matured paddy, ragi, millets, cotton and other crops, horticultural crops and vegetables may be completed by December 3. Harvested crops may be kept in a safe place, advised the weather forecasting office.
Make provision for drainage of excess water from agricultural fields, having standing crops and vegetables, it said.
