Puri ROB Fast-Tracked

Puri: As the world-famous Rath Jatra approaches this July, the Odisha Government is rapidly accelerating critical infrastructure projects to guarantee a seamless experience for millions of visiting devotees.

Amid a heightened focus on superior traffic management and congestion-free road networks in the holy town, the under-construction Matiapada Road Over Bridge (ROB) has taken center stage.

Reflecting the vision of Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi and Works Minister Shri Prithviraj Harichandan, the Department of Works is pushing for the rapid modernization of transit paths leading directly into Puri.

In order to ensure things stay strictly on track, Principal Secretary Works, Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh conducted a comprehensive on-site inspection of the Matiapada ROB on 28 May.

Known for his microscopic, data-driven approach to project governance, Shri Singh did not just settle for an overview. He carried out an exhaustive, point-by-point review of every remaining structural task, assessing exact physical progress against tightly wound deadlines.

Recognizing that this bridge is a vital linchpin for managing the colossal influx of vehicular traffic during the upcoming car festival, Shri Singh adopted a demanding, results-oriented stance.

He explicitly ordered the executing agency to speed up the launching of the bow-string girder and coordinate the immediate casting of the bridge deck slab.

Rather than just asking for speed, the Principal Secretary emphasized a dual-track strategy where rapid execution must run parallel with uncompromised engineering quality and rigorous adherence to on-site safety protocols.

Shri Singh made it clear that delays are out of the question with the grand festival looming. He directed the agency to scale up operations immediately by deploying extra manpower, moving more heavy machinery to the site, and utilizing every necessary resource to avoid bottlenecking. He stressed that a high level of inter-departmental synergy and daily coordination with the Works Department are mandatory to prevent any last-minute surprises before July.

Responding to this intensive review, the Chairman of the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction agency, Shri Subash Agrawal, provided concrete technical milestones. He assured the state delegation that the challenging bow-string girder launching would be successfully wrapped up by June 15, 2026, while the subsequent deck slab casting work is locked in for completion by June 20, 2026. This timeline ensures the structure is ready to be fully integrated into the city’s traffic template well ahead of the chariot procession.

Once commissioned, the Matiapada ROB will fundamentally transform how commuters enter and exit on the fast moving corridor. By bypassing active rail tracks, it will drastically reduce transit delays, eliminate local bottlenecks, and give traffic regulators a massive advantage in handling festival crowds. The administrative push highlights a concerted effort to deliver world-class, resilient transport infrastructure exactly when the global spotlight falls on the coastal holy city.

The high-level review was closely supported by top regional engineers, including Chief Engineer for National Highways-I Er. Narayan Patel, Chief Construction Engineer for the National Highways Circle in Bhubaneswar Er. Ajit Kumar Ray, Superintending Engineer Pupun Kumar Pradhan, and Superintending Engineer for Roads and Buildings Er. Soumya Ranjan Dwibedi. Together, their collective presence marked a unified state framework determined to see this crucial transit milestone cross the finish line safely and on schedule.
