PM Congratulates Adhikari

Kolkata: Shri Suvendu Adhikari officially took the oath of office as the Chief Minister of West Bengal today, May 9, 2026, marking a historic political shift in the state. The ceremony, held at the Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata, saw the induction of the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal’s history, ending 15 years of Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule.

Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Adhikari in the presence of high-profile dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several Chief Ministers from NDA-governed states. Alongside Adhikari, five cabinet ministers—Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Nisith Pramanik, and Kshudiram Tudu—were also sworn in to the new state cabinet.

Prime Minister Shri Modi shared his congratulations following the event, describing Adhikari as a leader deeply connected to the people. He noted that Adhikari’s close understanding of the public’s aspirations has been a defining trait of his leadership journey. The Prime Minister expressed confidence in the new administration, wishing the Chief Minister a fruitful tenure dedicated to the state’s development.

The transition of power follows the 2026 Assembly elections, where the BJP secured a decisive majority with 207 seats in the 294-member house. Adhikari himself achieved a significant victory in the Bhabanipur constituency, defeating former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a margin of over 15,000 votes.

In his first address after the ceremony, Chief Minister Adhikari stated that his government would focus on establishing a double-engine era of growth for West Bengal, prioritizing governance, security, and economic prosperity. Following the event, the Chief Minister was scheduled to visit the Writers’ Building to officially assume his administrative responsibilities.
