OFSDP On Community Afforestation Drive

Bhubaneswar: As the monsoon season begins, Odisha is celebrating Van Mahotsav Week (1-7 July) by highlighting the critical role its vast forest cover plays in securing the state’s ecological and economic future.

Senior Indian Forest Service officer Shri G Rajesh, who serves as the State Project Director of the Odisha Forestry Sector Development Project and Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Nodal), emphasized that forests are far more than just scenic green landscapes.

Instead, they serve as the foundational infrastructure for ecological security, biodiversity conservation, and long-term sustainable development.

Odisha boasts a rich forest heritage that spans 52,433.56 square kilometers, encompassing approximately 33.67 percent of the state’s total geographical area.

A major driver of the state’s modern conservation efforts is the Odisha Forestry Sector Development Project Phase Two. Through this initiative, more than 57,286 hectares of land have been successfully brought under afforestation.

This massive green expansion relies heavily on community participation, directly involving local populations in planting, protecting, and nurturing the newly forested areas to build climate resilience from the ground up.

Forest officials are drawing particular attention to a seasonal phenomenon: how healthy forests act as natural sponges during the monsoon. By absorbing heavy rainfall, reducing soil erosion, and slowly recharging groundwater tables, these ecosystems mitigate the risks of floods and droughts.

This natural buffering system protects local communities, safeguards agricultural livelihoods, and secures clean water resources across the region.

The ongoing greening efforts under the project align with the broader vision of a developed state, or Viksit Odisha. Forest department officials are urging citizens to look at forest restoration not merely as an environmental duty, but as a vital investment in a future where nature and human communities can thrive in harmony.

By participating in planting drives during this Van Mahotsav Week, residents across the state are being invited to become active partners in expanding Odisha’s green cover and securing its climate resilience for generations to come.
