Bhubaneswar: Residents across Odisha are experiencing intense discomfort as a significant surge in humidity levels couples with a prolonged dry spell. The regional meteorological centre has stated that hot and muggy conditions will continue to dominate the state over the next few days, offering little respite to the public.
While the monsoon reached the state last month, the subsequent weeks have seen highly uneven and overall poor rainfall distribution across several districts. Major agricultural belts and urban centers are facing a deficit in seasonal showers. This lack of sustained precipitation has failed to cool the atmosphere, causing day temperatures to remain slightly above normal while traps of moisture push the relative humidity levels well above seventy percent in coastal and interior pockets alike.
In coastal districts like Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur, the high humidity has turned daily life grueling. Sweat levels have broken records, and the lack of strong evening breezes has further aggravated the situation. Farmers who were preparing for the Kharif sowing season are now worried about the lack of consistent rain, as minor scattered showers are proving insufficient to wet the parched fields.
According to the latest weather bulletin, a few northern and interior districts might witness brief, isolated spells of thunderstorms and heavy rain due to localized cyclonic circulations. However, a widespread active monsoon system that could bring continuous, heavy downpours is still missing from the immediate forecast. Until a strong low-pressure area forms over the Bay of Bengal to pull the monsoon trough southward, the combination of poor rains and soaring humidity is expected to persist, keeping the climate sticky and uncomfortable across Odisha.
