Odisha Monsoon Advance

Bhubaneswar: Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Head of the India Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar said that the conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance further into parts of Odisha, Telangana, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh over the next three to four days.

In the past 24 hours, Boudh recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 42.8 degrees Celsius. Daytime temperatures have remained above normal across several areas, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, and Koraput. Meanwhile, isolated rainfall was witnessed across the state, with Paradip in the Jagatsinghpur district recording the highest rainfall at 60.5 mm. Looking at the cumulative rainfall since June 1, Odisha has recorded 55.1 mm against the normal seasonal expectation of 106.9 mm, marking a 48 percent rainfall deficit.

Relief from the heat is expected shortly, as maximum temperatures are forecast to drop by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next two days, stabilizing after that.

For the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain is highly likely at many places across northern and coastal Odisha, while south interior districts will see rain at a few places. The weather office has issued an orange warning for several districts, including Mayurbhanj, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Sundargarh. These areas are expected to experience isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and severe gusty winds ranging from 50 to 60 kilometers per hour. The remaining districts are on alert for isolated thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour.

On June 20, the wet spell will persist with light to moderate rain across north interior and coastal regions, alongside scattered showers in south interior Odisha. Heavy downpours and high winds are anticipated again in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Balangir, keeping the orange warning active for these areas.

As the week progresses from June 21 through June 25, the state will transition toward more scattered and isolated rainfall, though thunderstorms and gusty winds between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour will remain a regular feature. Notably, Koraput may experience an isolated heavy rainfall event on June 21.

A strict marine warning has been issued for the next 24 hours along and off the Odisha coast. Rough to very rough sea conditions are anticipated due to squally weather, with wind speeds projected to reach 40 to 50 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 60 kilometers per hour. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
