Odisha Braces for Week-Long Deluge

Bhubaneswar: The state of Odisha is bracing for a period of heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated instances of extremely heavy falls, and thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning, from June 29th to July 5th, 2025. This weather forecast is based on a special bulletin released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on June 30th, 2025.

A low-pressure area, previously located over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts, has now moved over coastal Gangetic West Bengal and its neighborhood as of 8:30 AM IST today, June 30th, 2025. The cyclonic circulation associated with this system extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. This system is anticipated to move slowly west-northwestwards across North Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand over the next two days.

For Day 1, valid until 08:30 AM IST on July 1st, 2025, an Orange Warning for heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds (30-40 Kmph) has been issued for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, and Koraput districts. A Yellow Warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 Kmph) is in effect for Rayagada, Nuapada, Jharsuguda, Balasore, Bhadrak, Gajapati, Deogarh, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, and Angul districts. Additionally, a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 Kmph) is advised for Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, and Ganjam.

For Day 2, valid from 08:30 AM IST on July 1st, 2025, to 08:30 AM IST on July 2nd, 2025, an Orange Warning for heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 Kmph) is issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur districts. A Yellow Warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 Kmph) is expected in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Bargarh, Sonepur, Angul, and Deogarh. Another Yellow Warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 Kmph) is in place for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Dhenkanal.

On Day 3, valid from 08:30 AM IST on July 2nd, 2025, to 08:30 AM IST on July 3rd, 2025, an Orange Warning for heavy to very heavy rain is issued for Sundargarh and Jharsuguda districts. A Yellow Warning for heavy rain is expected in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Deogarh, Sambalpur, and Bargarh.

For Day 4, valid from 08:30 AM IST on July 3rd, 2025, to 08:30 AM IST on July 4th, 2025, an Orange Warning for heavy to very heavy rain is issued for Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar. A Yellow Warning for heavy rain is also expected in Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, and Deogarh.

For Day 5, valid from 08:30 AM IST on July 4th, 2025, to 08:30 AM IST on July 5th, 2025, a Yellow Warning for heavy rain is issued for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh districts.

A Squally weather with wind speeds of 35-45 Kmph, gusting to 55 Kmph, is likely to prevail along and off the Odisha coasts from June 30th to July 2nd, 2025. Sea conditions are expected to be rough to very rough. Fishermen are strongly advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast during this period.

The Special Relief Commissioner’s office has advised all District Collectors to ensure that administrative machinery is ready to handle any eventualities. The public is urged to monitor weather updates and seek safe shelter during thunderstorm activity to protect themselves from lightning.

People should also avoid areas prone to waterlogging and refrain from staying in vulnerable structures. The advisory for fishermen should be strictly adhered to. Any damage occurring due to thunderstorms, whirlwind, hailstorm, lightning, and rainfall should be reported immediately to the government for information.
