Odisha-BHEL Power Talks

New Delhi: In a major push toward securing the state’s long-term power demands, Odisha Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo held a high-level constructive meeting in New Delhi to address critical contractual issues holding up key power infrastructure projects.

The meeting brought together the Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, alongside Shri Vishal Kumar Dev, Additional Chief Secretary, Energy Department, Government of Odisha and several other senior bureaucratic and technical officials.

The primary focus of the discussion centered on resolving ongoing contract friction points tied to the IB Thermal Power Station Stage-II and the broader expansion initiatives of the Odisha Power Generation Corporation.

The expansion program at the Ib Valley facility, particularly the planning and deployment of Units 5 and 6, is designed to inject a massive 1,320 megawatts of supercritical thermal power into the state’s energy mix.

However, engineering and equipment procurement timelines often face administrative gridlocks when dealing with large-scale engineering, procurement, and construction contracts. By initiating direct talks between the top leadership of BHEL, which serves as the primary manufacturer for India’s major power plant equipment, and Odisha’s Energy Administration, the State Government aims to establish an accelerated pathway for equipment provisioning, civil engineering tasks, and grid integration setup.

During the meeting, the officials expressed a strong commitment to strengthening bilateral institutional cooperation and ensuring timely project execution on the ground. Eliminating these structural bottlenecks is considered highly time-sensitive for Odisha, as the state is concurrently executing an ambitious energy roadmap to scale up its baseline infrastructure while transitioning toward green and sustainable industrial operations.

Officials noted that smooth coordination between BHEL and the state utilities will help avoid expensive project delays and stabilize power purchase agreements with GRIDCO, ultimately reinforcing fuel security and providing uninterrupted power to match the state’s rapid industrialization.
