Bhubaneswar: A deep sense of profound sorrow and solemnity enveloped the legislative assembly hall as leaders and lawmakers gathered to pay tribute to the victims of the catastrophic tragedy that recently devastated neighboring Nepal.
A formal high level resolution was officially brought before the house by Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi along with another motion for the departed Members of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
Moving the motion, the Chief Minister addressed the assembly with heartfelt grief, proposing a solemn remembrance to honor the thousands of lives that were abruptly cut short or remain missing following the extreme natural disaster. Reports presented to the house detailed how a sudden, massive glacial collapse high in the mountains triggered catastrophic flash floods along the swelling currents of the Bhote Koshi River.
Chief Minister Shri Majhi also mourned demise of the Ex Members of the House, who recently passed away.Opposition Members supported the motion.
The torrential wall of mud, water, and debris surged rapidly through the Himalayan valleys, completely washing away entire mountain settlements, severing critical communication routes, destroying infrastructure, and leaving widespread destruction in its wake across the entire region. The disaster has claimed over fourteen hundred human lives, while hundreds of individuals remain unaccounted for, leaving families and entire communities in deep turmoil.
Recognizing the immense scale of the human calamity, Speaker Shrimati Surama Padhy addressed the gathering of lawmakers and appealed directly to all members of the assembly. She urged the house to pause all legislative proceedings and observe a solemn one minute silence as a gesture of collective mourning and spiritual respect for the souls of those who perished in the flash floods.
Responding to the call from the chair, the entire assembly stood up in quiet reverence. For one full minute, total silence filled the chamber as leaders across all political lines lowered their heads to honor the memory of the deceased and offer silent prayers for the missing. The members expressed their deepest condolences and unanimous solidarity with the grieving families who are suffering the agonizing distress of losing their loved ones, while also reaffirming the shared bond of compassion and human sympathy with the people of Nepal during this tragic period.
