New Delhi: The Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR), in collaboration with the Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL) and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA), has introduced the Model Youth Gram Sabha (MYGS), a unique initiative to bring real-life democracy to the classroom.
The MYGS is a simulation of a genuine Gram Sabha, where school students assume the roles of village leaders, officials, and citizens. Shri Sushil Kumar Lohani, Additional Secretary Ministry of Panchayati Raj feels that the program is a hands-on exercise designed to replace traditional lecture-based learning.
Currently piloted in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) and Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS), the initiative allows students to debate local issues, design solutions, and make decisions just like a real village assembly. Students gain firsthand experience in grassroots democracy, learning how to manage development planning, resolve disputes, and take on the role of Sarpanch.
This experience is crucial for developing practical skills in public speaking, problem-solving, negotiation, and instilling values of justice and accountability.
The MYGS aligns directly with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes moving beyond rote learning to prepare students as active and responsible citizens. The program offers a holistic, multidisciplinary experience by combining social studies with practical skills like budgeting and planning.
Looking ahead, the Ministry plans to scale up the MYGS nationwide, which will include training for teachers, conducting mock sessions, and organizing regional competitions. Participating students will receive official certification for their civic engagement.
The launch of the Model Youth Gram Sabha represents an investment in India’s future, aiming to create a new generation of informed youth ready to strengthen local self-governance, help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat.
