Jhunurani Naik, a single mother who once cleaned toilets at a local nursing home to feed her seven-year-old son, has overcome economic hardship to become the state’s first woman desludger. Her journey shows what can happen when skill, opportunity, and personal determination come together.
Life took a difficult turn for Jhunurani when her husband left, leaving her as the sole support for her young child. With no safety net, she took a job cleaning toilets at a nursing home to make ends meet. The work was physically exhausting, came with very little pay, and offered no security, safety, or basic recognition. Every day was a battle simply to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table.
Her trajectory changed when she received an opportunity through the GARIMA Scheme, an initiative by the Government of Odisha aimed at providing safety, dignity, and professional recognition to core sanitation workers. Selected by the Kataka Municipal Corporation, Jhunurani underwent specialized training in operating mechanized equipment for the desludging of onsite sanitation systems.
Stepping into a field long dominated by men required immense courage. By becoming Odisha’s first woman desludger, Jhunurani did not just take on a new career, she also broke a major gender barrier. Today, she performs essential public health services equipped with proper safety gear, mechanized tools, and a reliable income, allowing her to work with safety and respect.
For Jhunurani, this transformation represents much more than a steady job. Having a recognized profession has given her back her independence and self-respect. Beyond her professional achievements, her biggest motivation remains her son. Every day when she puts on her uniform, she works with the goal of providing him with a quality education and helping him pursue higher studies so he can build a bright future.
Jhunurani’s story also highlights a broader movement towards safety and dignity for all sanitation workers. As Odisha prepares for the 2nd National GARIMA Conclave on August 22, 2026, themed Mission Zero to eliminate fatalities in sanitation work, her journey stands as a powerful reminder of how safety measures and real opportunity can turn hardship into a life of pride and purpose.
