New Delhi: As air pollution continues to pose a severe threat to public health and well-being across India, the focus on transitioning to renewable energy sources has intensified. This shift is widely recognized as a crucial step towards mitigating pollution, safeguarding the populace, and fostering healthier urban environments.
The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) is playing a pivotal role in accelerating this national transition. By actively promoting and financing clean energy projects, IREDA is working to realize the vision of cleaner air, clearer skies, and healthier communities nationwide. Renewable energy provides a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, directly contributing to a significant reduction in harmful atmospheric pollutants and making every breath feel fresher.
Under the leadership of its Chairman and Managing Director, Shri Pradip Kumar Das, IREDA has been aggressively overdriving the financing of green energy projects throughout the country. This proactive approach is essential for achieving India’s ambitious climate goals and ensuring a sustainable, pollution-free future for all its citizens. The continued push for green energy financing signals a strong commitment to moving closer to brighter mornings and healthier living conditions in polluted cities and towns.
Under the direction of Shri Pradip Kumar Das, IREDA has been a first-mover in financing emerging technologies that have a profound impact on air quality and climate goals.
IREDA has already financed its first Green Ammonia project and is actively supporting the Government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). Green Hydrogen is crucial for decarbonizing ‘hard-to-abate’ sectors like refineries and fertilizer production, which are significant sources of industrial air pollution.
Decentralized and Retail Renewables: The agency is deeply involved in financing decentralized generation projects under the PM-KUSUM scheme (for farmers) and Rooftop Solar programs. These initiatives reduce the need for grid power generated by polluting thermal power plants and offer clean power solutions at the local level.
Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Fuel Cells: IREDA provides financing for EV manufacturing facilities, charging infrastructure, and fuel cells, directly combating vehicular emissions—a major contributor to urban smog and PM2.5 pollution.
By financing solar, wind, and hydropower, IREDA lessens the country’s dependence on coal-fired power plants, which are major emitters of Sulphur Dioxide, Nitrogen Oxides and Particulate Matter all of which contribute to smog and respiratory illnesses
By financing this transition, IREDA is not only boosting India’s renewable energy capacity but also making a direct, measurable contribution to improving air quality and public health in densely populated areas.
