India’s Green Leap:Scarcity To Global Leadership

New Delhi: India’s renewable energy sector has undergone a monumental transformation over the past 11 years, evolving from a nascent stage to a position of global prominence.

This remarkable journey was highlighted by Santosh Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), underscoring India’s commitment to a sustainable energy future.

Speaking on the occasion, MNRE Secretary, Shri Sarangi pointed to the astounding growth in solar energy, which has surged from a mere 2.8 GW to over 108 GW in the last decade. This exponential rise signifies a strategic shift “from targets to transformation” and “from vision to global leadership,” as India now stands fourth in total renewable energy capacity, third in solar power, and third in wind energy globally.

The impressive progress is further underscored by recent achievements in FY 2024-25. India’s total installed renewable energy capacity reached 220.10 GW as of March 31, 2025, with a record addition of nearly 30 GW in the last fiscal year alone.

Solar energy led this growth, adding 23.83 GW and reaching a cumulative 105.65 GW. Wind energy also saw significant expansion, crossing the 50 GW mark to reach 50.04 GW. As of May 2025, solar capacity has further increased to over 110 GW, and wind power to over 51 GW, propelling India’s total renewable energy capacity (excluding large hydro) to 178.82 GW.

This phenomenal growth has been supported by robust policy measures, including competitive bidding models that have driven down solar tariffs, and schemes like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) for domestic manufacturing. The government’s ambitious target to install 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030 is well on track, with an aim to add approximately 50 GW annually.

The transformation is not just about capacity but also about a deeper commitment to energy independence and environmental stewardship. “11 years of progress — now powering the promise of tomorrow,” articulated MNRE Secretary, Shri Sarangi, encapsulating India’s dedication to a greener, more sustainable energy landscape for generations to come.
