New Delhi: India’s unwavering commitment to a sustainable future is powered by the burgeoning role of wind energy, a crucial pillar in the nation’s ambitious renewable energy goals. As of July 30, 2025, wind energy contributes a significant 51.67 GW to India’s total renewable energy capacity, accounting for over 22% of all installed clean power. This remarkable achievement underscores India’s accelerating transition towards a “Net Zero” future.
The driving force behind this commendable share is primarily concentrated in three states: Gujarat, leading with an impressive 13.8 GW of wind power, followed by Tamil Nadu with 11.8 GW, and Karnataka contributing a substantial 7.7 GW. These states are at the forefront of harnessing the power of wind to meet India’s escalating energy demands sustainably.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Secretary Santosh Sarangi, is on “overdrive,” pushing forward with various initiatives to amplify India’s green power mode. Sarangi’s tenure has seen a heightened focus on accelerating clean energy goals, including the ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
Recent initiatives by MNRE include the active promotion of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and the “PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana” for rooftop solar adoption. Secretary Shri Sarangi has been instrumental in fostering a collaborative ecosystem, engaging with states and stakeholders to streamline policy frameworks, enhance skill development for the renewable energy workforce, and encourage private sector investment in emerging clean technologies like green hydrogen and offshore wind.
India’s dedication to renewable energy is not just a goal; it’s a rapidly unfolding reality. With its significant wind power contribution and the strategic vision of MNRE, India is firmly riding the high winds towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for the world.
