India Reaches 300 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity

New Delhi: India has reached a historic milestone in its clean energy transition, crossing 300 GW of non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity generation capacity as of July 31, 2026. This achievement represents over 60% of the nation’s goal to reach 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030, directly translating Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of national energy security and climate action into reality.

Working to execute the Prime Minister’s roadmap for an Aatmanirbhar energy ecosystem, under the administrative leadership of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Secretary Shri Santosh Kumar Sarangi has spearheaded key policy enablers and implementation frameworks across the renewable sector. With India’s total electricity generation capacity reaching approximately 552 GW, the share of non-fossil fuel sources now stands at over 54%. The breakdown of the total 300.50 GW non-fossil fuel capacity includes 164.59 GW from solar power, 58.14 GW from wind power, 57.24 GW from large and small hydro power, 11.75 GW from bio-power, and 8.78 GW from nuclear power.

The strategic push under the guidance of the MNRE Secretary Shri Sarangi has delivered exceptional growth trajectories. Solar power continues to serve as the chief driver of expansion, scaling from 2.8 GW in 2014 to nearly 165 GW. Wind power has simultaneously expanded from 21 GW in 2014 to over 58 GW. In the 2025-26 period, the country set an all-time record by installing 55.29 GW of non-fossil capacity in a single year, anchored by 44.6 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind capacity. Consequently, actual clean electricity generation has surged from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26.

To reduce reliance on imports and fortify local supply chains, MNRE Secretary Shri Sarangi’s administration has focused on strengthening domestic industrial manufacturing. Supported by the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for high-efficiency modules, the capacity enlisted under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for Solar PV Modules has surpassed 200 GW, up from 2.3 GW in 2014. Beyond power generation, MNRE is steering deep industrial decarbonization by implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission, positioning India as a global production, consumption, and export hub for green hydrogen and its derivatives to ensure long-term industrial competitiveness and sustainable economic growth.
