EV Sales Surge

New Delhi: India is experiencing a rapid transformation in its transportation landscape as the electric vehicle ecosystem expands across major urban centers and smaller towns. According to recent updates released by the Press Information Bureau, electric mobility has become a critical driver of the country’s economic strategy, energy security goals, and clean air initiatives.

Since 2016, electric vehicle sales in India have grown nearly 46-fold, reflecting a major shift in consumer preferences. The overall EV adoption rate increased from 0.08 percent in FY 2015-16 to 8.26 percent in FY 2025-26. In addition to strong domestic demand, India’s EV export footprint expanded from 1.2 million USD in 2020 to 84 million USD in 2024, establishing the country as an emerging production and export hub.

The surge in electric vehicle adoption is supported by central initiatives, including the Production Linked Incentive scheme for the auto and auto component industry, as well as the flagship PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement scheme, known as PM E-DRIVE.

With an outlay of 10,900 crore rupees, the PM E-DRIVE scheme provides direct demand incentives to buyers through e-vouchers for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, e-trucks, e-ambulances, and e-buses. Out of its target to support 28 lakh electric vehicles, over 22.12 lakh EVs have already received financial support under the initiative. The policy framework also allocates funds to strengthen testing agencies and expand public charging stations nationwide.

In addition to consumer subsidies, government policies mandate a minimum domestic value addition of 50 percent under the PLI scheme to foster indigenous component manufacturing. Highlights of India’s global transition include the production and export of Suzuki’s first Made-in-India battery electric vehicle, the e-VITARA, which is slated for export to more than 100 international markets including Europe and Japan.

Aligned with the global EV30@30 vision, India aims for electric vehicles to represent 30 percent of total vehicle sales by 2030. To support this growth, plans are underway to build a network of 13.2 lakh public charging stations nationwide, ensuring robust infrastructure for long-distance and daily urban transport.
