New Delhi: Senior Tribal Leader Draupadi Murmu has been named as Governing NDA Candidate for President of India post.
The Parliamentary Board of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday named Shrimati Murmu as the NDA’s candidate for the Presidential Poll.
BJP National President J P Nadda announced her name at a press conference following a meeting of the party top brass.
Shrimati Murmu, former Governor of Jharkhand will be the first tribal woman to occupy the top constitutional post if she is elected.
Governing NDA has numbers as they are stacked in the favour of the BJP-led NDA.
Opposition had earlier announced Yashwant Sinha as its joint candidate for the post.
The Prez Poll is slated for 18 July.
Shrimati Murmu born and brought up in Tribal Zone of Mayurbhanj is a known saffron tribal leader with experience in Administration.
She was Minister Commerce & Transport in Naveen Patnaik Ministry during 2000-2002.
Shrimati Murmu is known for her simplicity and straightforwardness.
