Bhubaneswar: Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Bargarh district and Khinda village, the birth place of legendary freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai in Sambalpur district have been included in the Swadesh Darshan scheme of Centre.
The two sites, popular tourist destinations in Western Odisha, have been included under the scheme, the Culture and Tourism Ministry said.
The Ministry said Debrigarh and Khinda village have got the approval of the competent authority for development under SD 2.0 scheme.
Earlier, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Prdhan had requested Union Culture and Tourism Minister G Krishan Reddy in this regard.
Veer Surendra Sai had led a revolt against the British empire in 1857 and was imprisoned for more than 40 years. His birthplace Khinda is an important destination for history enthusiasts who can learn about his life and struggle for Indian independence.
Similarly, Debrigarh nestled between Hirakud dam and reservoir is not only a picturesque setting but also finds a special mention because Veer Surendra Sai had made his base at ‘Badapathara’ located within the sanctuary during his rebellion against the British.
The sanctuary is known for its easy sightings of animals, particularly Indian Bison, Wild Boars, Sambhar and peacocks.
Development of Tourism infrastructure and promotion of these destinations can significantly boost the local economy, create job opportunities and help in preserving the cultural and natural heritage of the region, sources said.
