Bhubaneswar: As many as 22 Members of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), who were arrested in connection to violence during a protest here on February 28, got bails from Orissa High Court.
According to party sources, all the BJYM activists including State President Irasis Acharya got bail from the HC on Thursday.
They were booked under various charges, including attempt to murder, for violence during their demonstration against the murder of ex-Minister Naba Kisore Das here on February 28. Since then, they were in Jharpada jail.
In a tweet, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said everyone has the right to protest in a democracy. The activists of Yuva Morcha are the activists of a political party, but the police administration treated them as criminals, which is not acceptable in a democracy.
All the activists were the victim of a conspiracy by the police and had to go to jail. It has been more than 50 days since this incident, he said.
“Today, the Hon’ble High Court granted bail to the youth activists. We respect the judicial system of the country,” Shri Pradhan said.
On February 28, the BJYM activists scuffled with Odisha police while marching towards Odisha Assembly in protest over the assassination of Minister Naba Kisore Das and deteriorating law and order in the State.
The Mahatma Gandhi Marg here turned into a battle when the BJP youth workers and police engaged in a clash.
The BJYM, youth wing of BJP, has lodged a complaint before the Capital Police Station on this issue. However, no case was registered against the Police. Following which, some BJP workers and leaders sit in dharna before the Police Station
