Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department has forecasted another week of continuous precipitation and thunderstorm activity across Odisha, extending an already wet monsoon season. The state regional meteorological center at Bhubaneswar indicated that light to moderate showers accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds will persist across multiple districts before intensified downpours take hold.
The current weather setup involves active trough lines and low pressure formations over the Bay of Bengal, which have repeatedly energized monsoon conditions over eastern India. A yellow warning has been issued for coastal, northern, and central districts as rain spells are set to escalate significantly, impacting districts such as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Cuttack, and Khordha.
Since the onset of the southwest monsoon in June 2026, Odisha has recorded substantial seasonal rainfall. Cumulative figures from June 1 through early September show the state receiving over 1,170 mm of precipitation, marking an overall surplus of around 20 percent above normal seasonal averages. The monsoon trajectory over the past three months has been punctuated by frequent active spells and low pressure systems that triggered localized heavy to extremely heavy rainfall events in districts including Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Sundargarh, and Rayagada.
Despite the overall excess, regional disparities have emerged across the state, with certain southern districts like Gajapati and Nabarangpur experiencing localized deficits while northern and coastal areas bore the brunt of heavy downpours. Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution during periods of severe lightning and sudden squalls, particularly in rural and low lying flood prone zones.
