Bhubaneswar: In a major organizational restructuring aimed at strengthening its grassroots presence, the All India Congress Committee has appointed senior leader Shri Lalji Desai as the In Charge of the Odisha Congress.
The decision, approved by Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, places a seasoned organizational strategist at the helm of affairs in Odisha as the party looks to navigate a highly competitive political landscape.
Shri Lalji Desai, who hails from Gujarat, brings decades of grassroots mobilizing experience to his new role. He is most prominently known across national political circles as the Chief Organiser of the Congress Seva Dal, the historical volunteer wing of the Indian National Congress.
Under his leadership, the Seva Dal underwent significant revitalization, focusing on ideological training, community outreach, and rebuilding the party’s secondary line of leadership.
Before taking over national responsibilities, Shri Desai served as a General Secretary of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, where he earned a reputation for conflict resolution and election management.
He has also frequently been deployed by the central leadership as an All India Congress Committee observer to oversee crucial internal organizational exercises and candidate selection in states like Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.
Political analysts view Shri Desai’s appointment as a strategic move to address internal factionalism and inject structural discipline into the Odisha state unit.
Unlike conventional political managers, Shri Desai’s background in the Seva Dal emphasizes disciplined, long-term grassroots network building rather than short-term electoral alliances.
His primary challenge will be to mobilize the party cadres, bridge gaps between regional leaders, and position the Congress as a formidable alternative against rival political forces in the state.
