UPSC Introduces Face Authentication

New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) successfully deployed a real-time face authentication system during the recently concluded Civil Services and Indian Forest Service (Preliminary) Examination 2026. The administrative initiative was designed to enhance the integrity of the public examination process and eliminate candidate impersonation by cross-referencing the live physical appearance of candidates at venues with the photographs uploaded during the initial application phase.

Operationally, the verification exercise was executed across all 2,072 examination venues nationwide. The technological solution was developed and implemented in-house by UPSC, with technical support from the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Administratively, UPSC established a standardized business process requiring all candidates to undergo face authentication prior to gaining entry into the examination halls. This process was governed by a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) distributed to all participating states, districts, and venues. To ensure smooth field execution, multiple rounds of training were provided to the invigilators.

From a logistical and cost standpoint, the application was designed to function on standard Android smartphones, allowing invigilators to utilize their own mobile devices. This eliminated the need for specialized or expensive hardware procurement. The system processed individual authentications within six to eight seconds, preventing congestion at entry points. During peak entry hours, the network infrastructure supported simultaneous usage by more than 7,000 invigilators, managing an authentication volume of approximately 12,000 requests per minute.

UPSC Chairman Dr. Ajay Kumar noted that while the technology was successfully developed, the primary administrative challenge involved large-scale deployment, rapid training of the existing invigilation workforce, and executing the rollout within a condensed timeframe. The initiative ultimately managed the verification of nearly 5.5 lakh candidates.

The successful rollout of this authentication protocol represents an administrative shift toward leveraging cost-effective, scalable digital technology to secure high-stakes public examinations and reinforce institutional transparency and fairness.
