New Delhi: India has achieved a significant milestone in its transition toward a sustainable power grid, reaching a total installed renewable energy capacity of 279.26 GW as of April 30, 2026.
This achievement underscores the nation’s commitment to a self-reliant energy future and its leadership in the global shift toward green power sources.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) reported that this growth aligns with the strategic vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to decarbonize the Indian economy and enhance energy security.
During a comprehensive performance review, Secretary of MNRE, Shri Santosh Sarangi, expressed satisfaction with the current trajectory, noting that the pace of installation across solar, wind, and hybrid projects has remained robust over the past year.
The rapid scaling of capacity is a result of coordinated policy implementation aimed at increasing domestic manufacturing of renewable components and streamlining large-scale project auctions.
Officials noted that the current momentum puts India in a strong position to meet its long-term climate commitments while simultaneously driving industrial growth and job creation within the green energy sector.
Government data indicates that solar energy continues to lead the capacity additions, supported by the expansion of ultra-mega solar parks and decentralized rooftop initiatives.
The ministry plans to further accelerate deployment in the coming months, focusing on grid integration and energy storage solutions to ensure a stable and resilient power supply for the country.
