New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party parliamentary board has appointed Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah as the central observer for the selection of the leader of the legislative party in West Bengal. In a formal notification issued on Tuesday, the party also named Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi as the co-observer for the process.

The high-level appointments follow the conclusion of the West Bengal assembly elections, where the party sought to establish its leadership structure for the new legislative term. The involvement of a senior union minister like Shah underscores the importance the central leadership places on the political landscape of the state.

Simultaneously, the party has designated Union Minister J.P. Nadda as the central observer for Assam to oversee the leadership selection there. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will assist him as the co-observer.

These observers are expected to travel to their respective states shortly to hold discussions with the newly elected legislators. Their primary role will be to facilitate a consensus on the name of the leader who will head the party in the legislative assembly, ensuring a smooth transition into the next phase of governance or parliamentary opposition.
