Sarangi Boosts Run For Sun

New Delhi: The Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium transformed into a hub of solar energy advocacy today as the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) hosted the Run for Sun marathon. Organized to mark International Sun Day, the event celebrated India’s massive stride toward energy independence, specifically highlighting the surge in solar power that now illuminates millions of homes across the nation.

Leading the charge was Shri Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, MNRE, who viewed the races not just as a sporting event, but as a symbolic sprint toward a greener future. Addressing the crowd of enthusiastic runners, Sarangi noted that the Run for Sun represents a collective step toward a more sustainable and self-reliant India.

Shri Sarangi highlighted that while the marathon featured 2 km and 5 km courses, the country’s real long-distance achievement lies in its 53-fold increase in solar capacity since 2014.

The timing of the event is particularly significant given the current energy uncertainties in West Asia. India’s solar sector has evolved into a pillar of Atmanirbharata, or self-reliance. As of March 31, 2026, the nation’s cumulative solar capacity reached 150 gigawatts, a staggering climb from the 2.82 GW recorded twelve years ago. Secretary Sarangi emphasized that the momentum is only accelerating, with the final 50 GW of that total being added in a record-breaking 15-month window.

Central to the Secretary’s message was the success of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The scheme has already facilitated 30 lakh solar rooftop installations, including a historic peak of 2.7 lakh completions in April 2026 alone. Sarangi reiterated that the ministry’s focus remains firmly on expanding this access, ensuring the clean energy transition reaches individual households through the Surya Ghar initiative.

With nearly 50 percent of India’s installed electricity capacity now derived from non-fossil fuel sources, the country has surpassed its 2030 targets years ahead of schedule. Currently ranked third globally in renewable energy capacity, India used today’s marathon to signal its intent to maintain this breakneck pace.

For MNRE Secretary Shri Sarangi and the thousands in attendance, the race continues until every rooftop contributes to India’s clean energy mission.
