Digital Safeguards For Minors

Bhubaneswar: A specialized training workshop aimed at strengthening digital safeguards for minors was recently conducted for District Education Officers and Academic ADEOs across Odisha.

Organized through a strategic partnership between the Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and ChildFund India, the event served as a critical platform for nearly 80 educational leaders and policy officials to address the evolving challenges of the digital landscape.

The initiative brought together key stakeholders from the School and Mass Education Department and OSEPA to standardize protective measures across the state’s academic institutions.

During the inaugural session, Smt. Babita Patra, Chairperson of OSCPCR, underscored the urgency of digital safety, noting that the Education Department holds a pivotal responsibility in shielding children from virtual risks.

This sentiment was echoed by Dr. N. Thirumala Naik, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the School and Mass Education Department, who commended the partnership and encouraged officials to lead awareness campaigns for both parents and students to combat online exploitation.

The discussion also pivoted toward practical implementation within the school system. Smt. Ananya Das, SPD of OSEPA, advocated for the integration of online safety into the formal curriculum through interactive and game-based learning.

This approach aims to make complex digital concepts more relatable for younger audiences. Additionally, Smt. Sangita Behera, Additional Director of OSEPA, elaborated on the institutional frameworks necessary to prevent abuse and create a secure digital environment for learners.

Evidence-based insights were provided by Dr. Shrabanti Sen of ChildFund India, who shared findings from a recent pilot project in Kendrapada. The data highlighted the necessity for a multi-departmental approach, suggesting that the Home, School and Mass Education, and Women and Child Development departments must work in tandem to be effective.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks from Sri Naveen of ChildFund India, following contributions from several members of the OSCPCR and OSEPA leadership teams who helped coordinate the event.
