Bhubaneswar: The 29th death anniversary of the legendary statesman and former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik was observed across Odisha on Friday, April 17, 2026, amid a notable intensification of the struggle for his political legacy.
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) commemorated the day as Prabada Purusha Divas (Legendary Leader Day). Extensive programs were organized at the party’s headquarters, Shankha Bhavan in Bhubaneswar, and across all assembly constituencies.
BJD President Shri Naveen Patnaik, who joined the state-level events virtually from New Delhi, paid floral tributes to his father. The party’s schedule included blood donation camps, social service activities, and intellectual seminars focusing on Biju Patnaik’s role in the freedom struggle and his vision for a modern Odisha.
Senior Vice President Shri Debi Prasad Mishra lauded the legendary leader for his rich contributions for the country in general and Odisha in particular, which chairing the event at Sankha Bhawan on 17 April.
Simultaneously, a significant separate gathering under the banner of the Odisha Citizens’ Forum took place at the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT). This event brought together several former associates and founding members of the BJD, including veteran leaders Bijoy Mohapatra, Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, and Dillip Ray. While organizers maintained the meeting was non-political, the rhetoric centered on reclaiming the Biju legacy for all of Odisha rather than a single party. They emphasized that the late leader’s ideology of regional pride and self-respect transcends political or biological lineage.
At the official level, the state government organized a tribute ceremony at the Odisha Legislative Assembly premises. High-ranking dignitaries, including the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Ministers Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, and Speaker Surama Padhy, offered floral tributes at the statue of the late leader.
Political analysts noted that the dual nature of this year’s observances reflects a shifting landscape in Odisha. The emergence of the Odisha Citizens’ Forum suggests an effort to consolidate a new political alignment by invoking the enduring charisma of Biju Patnaik, challenging the BJD’s traditional monopoly over his historical and ideological memory.
As the sun set on the anniversary, the day’s events underscored that while three decades have passed since his death, the shadow of Biju Patnaik continues to loom large over the state’s political landscape, serving as a powerful symbol of regional identity and pride.
