Green Ammonia Pact Boosts Agriculture

New Delhi: In a significant move toward sustainable agriculture and energy self-reliance, a landmark agreement signing ceremony for the procurement of green ammonia was held today at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan.

The event was attended by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi and Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Shri J.P. Nadda, marking a pivotal milestone under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Secretary MNRE, Shri Santosh Sarangi welcomed the dignitaries and coordinated the entire proceedings, which scripted success.

The agreements facilitate the sale and purchase of green ammonia for the fertilizer sector, aiming to reduce India’s long-standing dependence on imported grey ammonia. This transition is expected to strengthen domestic supply chains and provide a cleaner alternative for the production of essential fertilizers like Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP).

Addressing the gathering, Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi emphasized that the initiative reflects the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in driving India’s energy transition. He noted that the long-term, 10-year agreements would provide demand certainty for producers and unlock large-scale investments in the sector.

Minister Shri J.P. Nadda described the event as a historic step for the fertilizer industry, highlighting its role in building a robust green ammonia ecosystem. He stated that replacing fossil-fuel-based imports with domestic green alternatives would safeguard national food security against global supply chain volatilities.

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) coordinated the competitive bidding process, which resulted in the allocation of approximately 7.24 lakh tonnes per annum (TPA) to various developers. Major fertilizer units, including IFFCO, Paradeep Phosphates Limited (PPL), and Coromandel International Limited (CIL), are among the primary beneficiaries of these agreements.

The ceremony was also attended by Minister of State for Power and MNRE Shri Shripad Yesso Naik. The proceedings were welcomed and coordinated by Secretary MNRE Shri Santosh Sarangi, alongside Secretary of the Department of Fertilizers Shri Rajat Kumar Mishra.

With the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s target of producing 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, these agreements position India as a global leader in the green hydrogen derivative market while ensuring a sustainable future for Indian farmers.
