Green Ammonia Auction Breaks Record

New Delhi: In a monumental achievement for India’s clean energy transition, the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has announced a record low price discovery for Green Ammonia. The first-ever auction under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Scheme (Mode-2A) has secured a groundbreaking price of ₹55.75/kg, a significant step toward making Green Ammonia economically viable.

This pioneering auction, the first in a series of 13, covers the annual supply of 75,000 metric tonnes of Green Ammonia to Paradeep Phosphates Limited in Odisha. The larger tender aims to procure a cumulative 7.24 lakh MT/year, reflecting the scale of India’s ambition under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The discovered price of ₹55.75/kg, which translates to approximately USD 641/MT, represents a dramatic reduction from the previously discovered price of ₹100.28/kg (USD 1,153/MT) in the 2024 H2Global auction. This achievement narrows the price gap with traditional Grey Ammonia, which was priced at USD 515/MT as of March 2025. The 10-year fixed-price bid provides a strong economic incentive for industrial off-takers to embark on their clean energy journey.

SECI, in its role as the intermediary procurer, successfully anchored the auction under the guidance of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), with key support from the Department of Fertilizers and the participating off-takers. The auction witnessed intense competition, a clear indicator of the strong investor and developer confidence in India’s green energy transition framework.

This price discovery is a watershed moment for India’s Green Hydrogen ecosystem. By deploying a cost-discovery-based model with robust payment security mechanisms, the SIGHT scheme effectively addresses the critical challenge of offtake certainty for Green Hydrogen derivatives. This confidence-building measure is expected to unlock further investments and accelerate the large-scale adoption of Green Ammonia and other green fuels.

Insiders attribute this feat to the able leadership of Shri Santosh Sarangi, Secretary of MNRE and CMD of SECI, who has steered the initiative with a clear vision, positioning India as a potential global hub for Green Hydrogen production. The successful auction is a significant stride towards India’s long-term energy independence and its commitment to achieving its climate goals.
