Bhubaneswar: Shri Santosh Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), today chaired a significant high-level review meeting on the “PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana” at Lok Seva Bhavan in Bhubaneswar.
The crucial meeting aimed to assess the progress and strategize the further implementation of the ambitious rooftop solar scheme across Odisha.
The meeting saw the participation of key officials, demonstrating the strong commitment from both central and state governments towards the success of the initiative.
Among the prominent attendees were Shri Manoj Ahuja, Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary Energy, E&IT, Shri Vishal Dev; Shri JVN Subramanyam, Joint Secretary, MNRE; and Shri Jitendra Srivastava, CMD, REC Limited.

Also present were Commissioners, senior representatives from various Distribution Companies (DISCOMs), Gridco Odisha, the Energy Department, and other vital stakeholders. The diverse representation underscored the collaborative approach being adopted to overcome challenges and accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar in the state.
Discussions during the meeting focused on various aspects of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, including the current status of installations, identification of beneficiaries, streamlining the application process, addressing technical and infrastructural bottlenecks, and enhancing public awareness. The scheme, which aims to provide free electricity to households through rooftop solar installations, is a flagship initiative of the Government of India to promote renewable energy and reduce electricity bills for citizens.
MNRE Secretary Shri Sarangi emphasized the importance of synergy between all implementing agencies to ensure the smooth and effective rollout of the scheme. He urged the District Collectors and DISCOMs to work closely to facilitate installations and resolve any issues faced by consumers. The meeting also deliberated on strategies to expedite the process, including simplified procedures and enhanced technical support.
The presence of CMD, REC Limited, Shri Srivastava, highlighted the financial and implementation support being extended to the scheme. REC Limited plays a vital role in providing financial assistance for various power sector projects, including those under renewable energy.
This high-level review signifies the Union Government’s proactive approach in monitoring and steering the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana towards its objectives, ultimately contributing to India’s clean energy transition and energy security.
