Bhubaneswar: Very soon, the State will go for general election to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) as the Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) Department on Wednesday issued two formal notifications for conduct of the Urban Poll 2022.
The notifications were issued following the recommendations of the State Election Commission (SEC).
The election will be held for the post of Mayors, Corporators, Chairpersons and Councillors in 107 Notified Area Council (NACs)/Municipalities and three Municipal Corporations- Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Berhampur.
“The State Government do hereby call upon all wards in the city of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Cuttack Municipal Corporation and Berhampur Municipal Corporation to elect Mayors and Corporators in accordance with the provisions of the said Act and Rules and orders made there under,” the H&UD department said in its notifications issued for the poll in Corporation towns.
As per the notification, the term of five years from the date of appointment for the first meeting of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) and Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has been completed. So, it is expedient to hold general elections for the purpose of reconstituting the Municipal Corporations, it said.
The delimitation of wards and reservation of seats and offices of Mayors of the said Municipal Corporations have been completed. Women mayors to head the BMC and BeMC, while Cuttack Mayor post has been kept unreserved.
In another notification issued for the election to Municipalities and NACs, the Department said, “The State Government do hereby call upon all the wards in the said Municipal areas except ward No. 4 of Bhadrak Municipality to elect the Chairpersons and Councillors in accordance with the provisions of the said Act and Rules and orders made there under.”
The five-year term has been completed in respect of 103 Municipalities/ NACs. Further, in the meantime Chandabali NAC, Dhamnagar NAC, Bijepur NAC and Remuna NAC are newly constituted. So, the poll will be held for 107 Municipalities and NACs in the State.
Delimitation of wards and reservation of seats except ward No. 4 of Bhadrak Municipality and reservation of the offices of the Chairpersons of the 107 Municipalities/ NACs have been completed, said the Department.
