Vidyutprabha Devi Centenary Celebrated

Bhubaneswar: The birth centenary of legendary Odia literary figure, Vidyutprabha Devi, was celebrated with immense fervor and grandeur at the auditorium of Rama Devi Women’s University here.

The state-level event, a collaborative effort by the Odisha Sahitya Akademi and the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department, Government of Odisha, paid a rich tribute to a poet whose legacy continues to resonate deeply within the literary landscape.

The commemorative ceremony drew a distinguished array of guests, underscoring the enduring impact of Vidyutprabha Devi’s contributions. Union Education Minister, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, expressing profound reverence for her literary prowess.

“It is an honour to be part of the centenary celebration of the great literary figure Vidyutprabha Devi. Her early dedication to literature and her enduring passion have inspired generations. When one speaks of feminist voices in Odia poetry, her name stands tall. She is a true symbol of women’s empowerment and her writings continue to guide and inspire us,” stated Shri Pradhan.

He further emphasized the critical role of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence, in promoting and globalizing Odia literature in the current age.

Padma Bhushan awardee and acclaimed writer Dr. Pratibha Ray, attending as Guest of Honour, lauded Vidyutprabha Devi as an “exceptional poet” whose works “enriched Odia literature significantly.” Dr. Ray highlighted the feminist and socialist underpinnings of Devi’s poetry, noting its deep emotional resonance where both “love and pain find voice in her verses.”

Odia Language, Literature and Culture Minister, Shri Suryabanshi Suraj, hailed Vidyutprabha Devi as a “powerful advocate of feminism and a shining example of women’s strength.” He underscored the pivotal role of women in achieving the Vision of Vikshit Odisha 2036 and Vikshit Bharat 2047, asserting that efforts must focus not only on national progress but also on ensuring the global celebration of Odia language and literature.

Ekamra MLA Shri Babu Singh described literature and culture as the “mirror of society,” recognizing Vidyutprabha Devi as the “guiding light of Odia literature.” He voiced his hope that her ideals would continue to inspire the youth towards building a stronger society.

A deeply personal insight into Vidyutprabha Devi’s literary journey and contributions was offered by her son, Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty, former Vice-Chancellor of Central University, Koraput.

A highlight of the celebration was the inauguration of a painting workshop by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, where artists meticulously brought Vidyutprabha Devi’s inspiring persona to life through their creative expressions, a gesture appreciated by Shri Pradhan as a fitting artistic tribute.

On this significant occasion, a book titled “Bajiraout” and the latest issue of the Odisha Sahitya Akademi’s magazine “Konark” were formally released. The event also featured an insightful panel discussion dedicated to exploring the life and works of Vidyutprabha Devi, offering a deeper understanding of her profound impact.

The program commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Chandrasekhar Hota, Secretary of Odisha Sahitya Akademi, and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Chandi Charan Rath, Vice-Chancellor of Rama Devi Women’s University.

The event witnessed the gracious presence of Shri Bijaya Ketan Upadhyaya, Director of Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department, along with students of Rama Devi Women’s University, renowned writers, intellectuals, and social workers, all united in celebrating the enduring legacy of Vidyutprabha Devi.
