Bhubaneswar: In a major boost to rural infrastructure and public health, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, has expanded its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiative across the Kalahandi and Rayagada districts of Odisha. The company has commissioned a series of solar powered borewells integrated with sophisticated nanotechnology based filtration systems to provide a sustainable solution for clean drinking water in remote areas.
The newly installed systems are located in the villages of Chulbadi, Sunger, Dhamanghati, Dumerpadar, Sagabari, Ladakhaman, and Siadimal, directly benefiting more than 3,000 residents. These installations have been formally handed over to Panchayat Raj Institutions to ensure local governance and long term community ownership. Alongside the handover, local Sarpanches and community members received orientation on the technical operation and maintenance of the units to guarantee their longevity.
Each facility features a 1.5 kW solar power unit that drives a 1 HP submersible pump, allowing for consistent water extraction from deep aquifers without relying on the traditional power grid. The purification process is centered on TSRF nanotechnology, which utilizes rice husk derived media infused with nano silver particles to neutralize pathogens. This is complemented by multi layer micro mesh filtration to remove suspended solids. The gravity based design ensures that the system remains energy efficient while delivering a purification capacity of 500 litres per hour.
Shri Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, noted that these community efforts are closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, focusing on clean water and sanitation. He emphasized that by improving infrastructure in these regions, the company aims to build more resilient communities.
Shri Gunasingh Majhi, Sarpanch of Sunger Gram, added that the facilities are particularly vital given the high iron content in local groundwater, providing a critical health resource ahead of the summer months.
This project is part of Vedanta Aluminiums broader social impact strategy in Odisha, which encompasses education, healthcare, and rural infrastructure. By collaborating with local authorities, the company continues to implement interventions designed to foster tangible socio economic progress in its operational areas.
