Bhubaneswar:Ahead of his visit to Vikram Dev Autonomous College, Jeypore, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday approved the proposal to upgrade the autonomous college into an university.
The Chief Minister hoped that it will be a milestone in the field of higher education in South Odisha. It has also fulfilled the long-standing demand of intellectuals, and students of undivided Koraput district, Patnaik said.
Following the approval of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to a proposal to grant university status to the famous Vikram Dev Autonomous College, the Higher Education Department has issued an official notification in this regard.
“In exercise of powers conferred by sub-section (1) and (2) of Section 32 of the Odisha University Act, 1989 (Odisha Act 5 of 1989), the State Government do hereby alter the territorial Jurisdiction of Berhampur University by establishing a new University called the Vikram Dev University at, Jeypore, Koraput, Odisha with effect from the date of notification in the Odisha Gazette”, read the notification.
The college, which is completing 75 years, has played a significant role in the field of higher education in the undivided Koraput district imparting teaching to BBA,BCA and B Ed students. The college has 16 Postgraduate, 17 undergraduate programmes.
At present all colleges of undivided Koraput district are affiliated to Berhampur university. After the new University thousands of students of Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri districts would be benefitted.
