Toilet Functionality Takes Center Stage

New Delhi: The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, has launched a nationwide campaign titled ‘Hamara Shauchalaya, Hamara Bhavishya’ (हमारा शौचालय, हमारा भविष्य) on World Toilet Day 2025.

The campaign, spearheaded by Shri Ashok Kumar Meena, Secretary DDWS, aims to reinforce the critical link between maintaining functional toilets and securing a cleaner, healthier future for all communities.

The initiative is central to the ongoing efforts under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase-II, which focuses on sustaining the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and progressing towards ‘ODF Plus Model’ villages. Over 11 crore toilets were constructed in the first phase of SBM-G, which achieved ODF status for rural India in 2019. Phase-II, launched in 2020, now emphasizes long-term sustainability.

The three-week campaign, which will conclude on Human Rights Day, December 10, 2025, stresses the functionality assessment, repair, and aesthetic upliftment of rural sanitation facilities, including both Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs) and Individual Household Latrines (IHHLs).

Key objectives include enhancing maintenance systems for community toilets and widespread awareness generation. Special focus will be given to schools to educate students on sanitation, safe faecal waste handling, and climate-resilient sanitation protocols. The campaign strongly encourages Jan Bhagidari (people’s participation) to instill a collective sense of responsibility for Sampoorna Swachhata (Total Cleanliness).

States and Union Territories have been directed to strengthen on-ground systems and engage local eminent personalities, Padma awardees, retired armed forces personnel, youth groups (NSS, NYKS, NCC), and schoolchildren for awareness and support. The campaign will also include the felicitation of sanitation workers and the distribution of IHHL sanction letters to eligible beneficiaries.
