Bhubaneswar: The 10th edition of Odisha Manaska, a monthly discussion forum organized by All Things Odisha, convened today at ExtraOdinari space in Saheed Nagar. The session centered on the topic “Who Are We on Screen? Shaping and Reflecting the Evolving Odia Identity Through Film.”
Film journalist Surya Deo and young filmmaker Swastik Choudhury engaged in a conversation with around 20 participants from diverse backgrounds. Discussions revolved around the portrayal of Odia identity, the reflection of cultural evolution in Odia cinema, and the representation of the state’s diversity.
Shri Deo emphasized the need for Odia cinema to reflect the rooted yet changing cultural identity, noting that the remake culture had impacted original storytelling. Swastik Choudhury stressed the importance of creating globally appealing Odia films while retaining cultural essence, highlighting that resources shouldn’t be seen as limitations.
Participants also pointed out the need for improved accessibility for film lovers and a more conducive ecosystem for filmmaking in Odisha. The Odisha Manaska circle aims to foster intellectual discussions on various aspects of the state, providing a democratic platform for collective wisdom and contribution towards a better Odisha. Previous sessions have covered topics ranging from Odia identity and festivals to migration and regional disparity.
