Bhubaneswar: A Continuing Medical Education (CME) event, organized by the Department of Orthopedics at the SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM), was held on Friday to coincide with the India Orthopedic Association’s Bone and Joint Week. The event, themed “Old is Gold—360° Care for the Elderly: Ensuring Mobility, Dignity and Longevity,” focused on providing comprehensive care for senior citizens.
Discussions at the CME covered a range of subjects critical to geriatric orthopedic health, including advances in fracture management, updates in joint replacement, mobility restoration techniques, and preventive strategies to maintain bone strength in the elderly.
Expert sessions were led by a team of orthopedic specialists from the hospital. Dr. Budheswar Majhi, Senior Consultant; Dr. Siddhartha Samal, Senior Consultant; Dr. Chandan Panda, Consultant; and Dr. Surya Kanta Sahoo, Associate Consultant, presented the latest scientific updates and highlighted the importance of prioritizing bone health in individuals over 60 years of age as a key component of holistic geriatric care.
Dr. Swetapadma Dash, the CEO of SUMUM, addressed the gathering, stating, “Healthy bones and joints are the foundation of an active, independent life. By bringing together orthopedic experts and frontline healthcare providers, we are not just sharing knowledge but building a stronger, more confident approach to care that empowers patients, especially the senior citizens, to live life to the fullest.” She added that events like this demonstrate the hospital’s commitment to being at the forefront of medical advancements.
Brig. (Dr.) Biraj Mohan Mishra, the hospital’s Chief of Medical Services, emphasized the central role of orthopedics in preserving functional independence and dignity for the elderly.
In a message, Prof. (Dr.) Manojranjan Nayak, Founder President of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan, said that healthcare must evolve to meet societal needs and that caring for the elderly is a shared responsibility. He noted that such programs reflect SUMUM’s mission of combining medical excellence with compassion and respect for every individual.
