State Moots Future Ready Energy

Bhubaneswar: Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, Odisha is accelerating its transformation into a global energy powerhouse, setting a rigorous pace to achieve the ambitious Viksit Odisha 2036 and Viksit Bharat 2047 goals. The state government has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap designed to transition Odisha from a traditional mineral-rich state to a future-ready energy ecosystem defined by green hydrogen, massive renewable expansion, and strategic cross-border partnerships.

Chief Minister Shri Majhi has emphasized that energy security and sustainability are the cornerstones of the state’s economic future. His administration is spearheading a multi-pronged strategy that integrates proactive resource adequacy planning with institutionalized five-year rolling demand forecasts. This approach ensures that Odisha’s burgeoning industrial landscape remains supported by a reliable and surplus power supply while simultaneously decarbonizing the grid.

In direct alignment with the Chief Minister’s vision, Deputy Chief Minister Shri K.V. Singh Deo, who holds the Energy portfolio, has issued decisive directions for the swift implementation of key infrastructure projects. Shri Singh Deo has been instrumental in refining the state’s power export strategy, overseeing long-term agreements with energy-deficient states such as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. These agreements not only stabilize the regional grid but also position Odisha as a critical energy provider for the nation. His focus remains on block-level planning to ensure that the transition to renewable energy and storage solutions reaches the grassroots, bridging the gap between urban industrial hubs and rural districts.

Driving the administrative engine behind this transition is Shri Vishal Kumar Dev, Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) for Energy and E&IT. Shri Dev is on an overdrive to streamline the investment climate and fast-track high-potential projects. Under his guidance, the state has initiated intensive geo-spatial mapping to identify high-potential zones for specialized energy production. Notable among these are the solar-rich corridors of Balangir and the pumped storage potential in Koraput. These sites are being developed to serve as the backbone of the state’s energy storage capacity, essential for managing the intermittency of renewable sources.

A central pillar of this new ecosystem is the positioning of Odisha as a global hub for green hydrogen and green ammonia. GRIDCO, the state’s nodal agency, is working at a frantic pace to strengthen energy partnerships for both domestic and global markets. Strategic offtake agreements and manufacturing facilities are already being established in coastal hubs like Gopalpur and Paradip, with the primary goal of exporting green molecules to Japan, South Korea, and the European Union. These international collaborations are backed by the state’s robust port infrastructure and the Odisha Renewable Energy Policy, which offers a streamlined single-window facilitation for global investors.

The state is also making significant strides in grid-scale storage, with multiple Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects and floating solar initiatives moving from the planning phase to execution. By integrating these advanced technologies, the Energy Department is ensuring that Odisha remains ahead of the curve in the national energy transition.

Through this synchronized effort—led by the political will of Chief Minister Shri Majhi, the strategic oversight of Deputy Chief Minister Shri Singh Deo, and the administrative vigor of ACS Vishal Kumar Dev—Odisha is not just planning for the future but actively building it. The state is firmly on track to increase its renewable energy share significantly by 2036, ensuring a resilient, clean, and prosperous energy future for all its citizens.
