Bhubaneswar: Odisha, witnessed an electrifying celebration of National Sports Day today, marked by unprecedented participation and enthusiasm across its districts.
In a tribute to the legendary hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand, sports enthusiasts of all ages came together to celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and physical fitness. The sports fraternity and the general public united in the pursuit of health and sporting excellence.
In Bhubaneswar, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi presented the prestigious Biju Patnaik Sports and Bravery Awards, acknowledging the remarkable contributions of Odisha’s sporting heroes.
This grand ceremony highlighted the state’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering a culture of sports. The awards, regarded as the highest honour for sports and bravery in Odisha, were presented amidst a gathering of sports enthusiasts, dignitaries, and the state’s elite athletes.
Speaking on this occasion, the Chief Minister said, “Our sportspersons are our pride and glory. Their sacrifice, courage and excellence continue to inspire all of us, our young society.”
Thanking them for their contribution in the field of sports, he wished them to achieve more success and bring more glory for the State in the coming.
Stating that the success of sportspersons is the success of the entire Odisha, he said that every Odia is proud of this achievement.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has made progress in various fields and is moving towards achieving the goal of a developed India, he said.
“Our sportspersons have also proved their skills and excellence in international sporting events. For the first time since 1972, the Indian hockey team created history by winning consecutive medals in the 2020 and 2024 Olympics,” pointed out the CM.
In hockey, India is definitely making progress towards regaining its former glory. The Indian hockey team recently came to Bhubaneswar and was given a grand welcome by the people of Odisha and the State Government.
“Seeing the confidence and strong spirit of the players, I am sure that India will win the gold medal in the upcoming Olympics,” he said.
Shri Majhi said that the State Government is always trying to realize dreams of the people of Odisha in the field of sports and many innovative steps are being taken in this direction.
The celebration extended far beyond the capital, with every district of Odisha joining in to mark this auspicious day. From marathon races to friendly matches, across sports disciplines, the entire state turned into a sporting arena.
The Fit India Pledge, a powerful message highlighting the importance of a fit and healthy society, was administered across the Sports and Youth Services Department and echoed in every district, inspiring thousands to adopt a lifestyle of fitness and well-being.
The air was filled with the rhythmic sound of running footsteps as over 1,000 enthusiasts participated in mini-marathons held in Sambalpur and Sundargarh.
From young children to senior citizens, the streets came alive with the determination and spirit of the runners, epitomizing the theme of unity through sports. Dhenkanal witnessed a magnificent march past that saw overwhelming participation from schools, colleges, and local sports clubs. The disciplined formations and patriotic fervour displayed during the march past were a testament to the district’s commitment to sports.
A high-energy swimming competition was held in Angul, attracting swimmers from different age groups.
At the Mahatma Gandhi Stadium in Berhampur, a friendly cricket match turned into a sporting spectacle, with local teams putting their best foot forward. The match was a delightful display of talent, strategy, and sportsmanship, with every boundary and wicket cheered by an enthusiastic crowd.
Gajapati conducted a friendly badminton match, which saw the participation of budding talents and seasoned players.
The overwhelming participation across districts and the heartfelt celebrations were a powerful reminder of the state’s commitment to promoting sports at all levels.
