Bhubaneswar: The on-going national debate surrounding the Waqf Bill has ignited a fierce political confrontation in Odisha, with Congress MLA Sofia Firdous levelling accusations against Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Rajya Sabha MP Debashish Samantaray.
Congress Lawmaker has criticized Shri Samantaray, alleging that his ambiguous statements regarding the Waqf Bill constitute indirect support for the legislation and an attempt to mislead the public.
The core of her accusation centers on the discrepancy between the BJD’s stated stance and the actions of its members in Parliament.
Sofia claims that while BJD MP Sasmit Patra openly acknowledged voting in favor of the bill, Debashish Samantaray has resorted to “evasive remarks” by stating he “walked out” during the voting process.
Ms.Firdous interprets this “walkout” as a veiled form of support, suggesting a “deal was made.”
The Congress MLA further alleges that BJD leaders are engaging in “secret deals” to shield themselves from potential legal repercussions related to past “scams and corruption.”
She has stated that BJD Lawmaker has betrayed the Muslim community.
The controversy has also exposed apparent divisions within the BJD, with reports indicating conflicting positions among its Rajya Sabha members. Concerns have been raised regarding the parties secular stance.
The Waqf bill has caused heated debate throughout India, and is now causing political friction within the state of Odisha.
However BJD MP Shri Samantaray has rejected all the allegations of Congress Lawmaker.
This political clash has significantly heightened tensions in Odisha, with the Waqf Bill becoming a focal point of contention between the Congress and the Binju Janata Dal.
