Puri: A pivotal meeting was held here on 24 May between Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), and Dr. Yaduvendra Singh Rawat, Director General (DG) of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), to chart the course for critical conservation and restoration initiatives at the revered Shree Jagannatha Temple in Puri.
The discussions underscored a shared commitment to safeguarding this architectural marvel and spiritual beacon, especially as the annual Ratha Jatra approaches.
The meeting highlighted the collaborative spirit between the SJTA and ASI, both vital custodians of India’s cultural and religious heritage. Key agendas addressed included:
- Priority Conservation in Garbha-Griha for Ratha Jatra: A significant focus was placed on urgent conservation and restoration works within the Garbha-Griha (sanctum sanctorum), deemed critical to be done during the sacred Ratha Jatra. This ensures the structural integrity and sanctity of the inner sanctum for the Trinity.
- Expedited Completion of Ratna Bhandar Works: Discussions emphasized the early completion of the remaining conservation and repair works of the Ratna Bhandar (treasure chamber) by the ASI. This sensitive undertaking is crucial for the long-term preservation of the temple’s invaluable ceremonial ornaments and historical artifacts. Reports indicate that the internal conservation of the Bhitara Ratna Bhandar (Inner Ratna Bhandar) is nearing completion, with emphasis on structural enhancements and the installation of stainless steel box beams.
- Enhanced Accessibility for Devotees: A compassionate and crucial initiative discussed was the early completion of a ramp system at the North Gate Entrance of Shree Mandir. This will significantly facilitate entry for aged and differently-abled devotees, upholding the inclusive spirit of the temple and ensuring that all devotees can partake in the divine Darshan. SJTA has indicated that this ramp system is a high priority and is expected to be completed within the next four months.
- Modern Amenities and Facade Enhancement: The meeting also covered the provision of an air conditioning system in the Nata Mandapa (dance hall/audience hall), a measure that will greatly enhance comfort for pilgrims, especially during peak seasons. Furthermore, plans for facade lighting of the temple were discussed, which will not only highlight its architectural grandeur but also enhance its visual appeal during evenings and festivals.
- Structural Integrity of Jagamohana and Subsidiary Temples: Critical conservation work for the outside sloping roof of the Jagamohana (porch) was deliberated, addressing long-standing concerns about its structural stability. Additionally, the provision of lightning arrestors to high-rise subsidiary temples like Bimala, Mahalaxmi, Bhubaneswari, Adi Nrusingha, and Surya Temples was emphasized. This is vital for protecting these ancient structures from natural elements and ensuring their longevity.
- Reinforcement of Cantilever Chali Stone Supports: The strengthening of M.S. Joist supports/vertical steel columns beneath the cantilever chali stone of the Jagamohana and Bhogamandapa was a key technical point. This measure aims to reinforce crucial architectural elements and ensure the structural stability of these significant temple sections.
- Chemical Cleaning for Preservation: The importance of chemical cleaning and surface treatment of the outer stone surfaces of the main temple was stressed. This scientific intervention is crucial for removing accumulated grime, pollutants, and biological growth, restoring the original aesthetic of the temple’s intricate carvings and preserving the stone from further deterioration due to environmental factors. ASI has previously undertaken such cleaning efforts, emphasizing the use of scientific methods to protect the stone.

SJTA Chief Dr. Padhee extended his gratitude to DG ASI Dr. Rawat for ASI’s unwavering support, presenting him with Sukili-Bhoga from the Temple as a token of appreciation.
The high-level ASI delegation included DDG (Conservation) Janhwij Sharma, Director (Conservation) Bhima Azmira, Director (Science) Manoj Bhatnagar, Regional Director Dillip Khamari, and local officials. From SJTA, Administrator, Development, Debabrata Sahoo, and OSD Works, Asis Subudhi, were present.
This collaborative endeavor between the SJTA and ASI underscores the paramount importance of preserving Shree Jagannatha Temple, not just as a religious edifice, but as a living monument of unparalleled archaeological, architectural, and spiritual significance that continues to draw millions of devotees and scholars alike.
